LA MONJA ENANA is one of those bands that can really cause a conmotion with just a demo tape -which was chosen by several radio shows as the best 1998 demo- and a couple of gigs. Their fizzy, bubbling, colourful eighties-like techno-pop is one of the best things that had happened in Spanish indieland in years. In a moment when sheer fun and good humour were very difficult to find in new outfits, there came LA MONJA ENANA from its space shuttle to spice up our lives with their catchy, refreshing tunes, perfect to forget the daily grind for some minutes.
The lyrics of their songs are little fantasy tales -they even dedicate a song to Lovecraft-, all haunted doll houses, shooting stars and fall-out shelters; ok, the themes are not exactly very luminous, but these little fables are served with a tasty dressing of effervescent keyboards, bouncing rhythms and caramel vocals. So the final result is close to spending an afternoon in a fun fair, visiting the house of horror with the mouth full of sugar candy.
There’s room as well for less creepy, more down-to-earth topics, like the one who opens the single, “Cartas De Amor”, which is about someone who receives anonymous love letters everyday. “Por Amor Al Arte” tells us the hilarious story of a graphic artist bored with painting, who dreams of working as a bank cashier.
On early January 2000, this record was chosen “single of the week” by British weekly MELODY MAKER. It’s probably the first time in the history of Spanish pop that a single from this country achieves such a thing.
