Joe Moore is the composer behind THE YEARNING, JULIE ET JOE, and THE PERFECT KISS. He is the producer behind the most inspired moments of Cristina Quesada, Lia Pamina, and Maddie Mae. But in 2024, he released his first album as SUNLIT, a project that delved into more introspective sounds and tempos, inspired by the work of bands such as BEACH HOUSE, ALVVAYS, and MAZZY STAR. An album that broke our hearts and revealed us a new dimension of a composer capable of dancing between styles and writing songs with unique inspiration. And that's what makes SUNLIT so special: here, Joe takes on all the vocal duties and brings the songs to a more intimate sound. That debut was escapism and melancholy, and this new álbum, “Neon Pink”, is beauty and raw emotion.
And it starts strong: “Beside” explains the feelings of a fulfilled and reciprocated heart. “Goosebumps” reflects the desire evoked through reverberations that dance between THE RAVEONETTES and CIGARETTES AFTER SEX. “Neon Pink” seeks to capture the moment when you feel that the person you admire reciprocates your feelings. And that inevitable romanticism floats through other wonders like “Ours To Tell,” “Lifetime Of First Times,” and the song that closes the album, “Pompeii Moment”, which talks about the idea of dying next to the one you love most when the world ends. And “Let You Down” is the saddest song on the album, describing the end of a relationship.
That is the great identity that makes this album different from anything it could be compared to: it looks at the present with a perfect blend of boldness and delicacy, crafting melodies that remind us equally of LOW and Bryan Ferry or THE STONE ROSES and Julee Cruise, carving out a unique space of its own among such great creators of melodies and atmospheres. And, with such ingredients, it manages to sonically define the most intense emotions and capture feelings that only music can explain.
Looking back at everything Joe Moore has done in just a few years, how he has played with synth-pop, disco, baroque pop, chanson, bossa nova, and countless other styles, and seeing how he has managed to come out shining, is truly admirable. To think that an artist has been able to do all that by pouring all his creativity and deepest feelings into a project like this is deeply moving.
