Sound Blab [En]: If I Can't Have You [Review]
If I Can't Have You/Gotta Pull Myself Together
The Yearning
Label: Elefant Records
Release date: 2014-06-30
Over an eerie organ backing, teenage heart-throb Maddie Dobie tickles our hearts and minds once again with a dreamy plea to her boyfriend: “If I can’t have you/ then I’ll keep on seeing him.” Dude, wake up! We’re talking dreamboat city here!
Another drool-worthy confection from Britain’s cross between Burt Bacharach and Phil Spector (that would be Joe Moore) and the sweetest voice this side of a church choir, this teaser for the latest album mines the same field as previous releases, but it’s something of a cottage industry for Moore and co.
The Dusty, Jackie, and Paris Sisters fans will need this in their collection. Joe’s twangy guitar solo adds just the right touch of melancholy to a typical 'girl loses boy' lyric, but Dobie could read the phone-book and I’d melt.
The flip is more upbeat and one of their catchiest tracks yet. Expect more of that glistening 50s innocence, sugar-coated with Dobie’s cuddly vocals, cooing backing harmonies, and Moore’s tasteful guitar-licks. The album (their first full-length) is gonna kill and is one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the summer.
