Some bands pay tribute to their favourite artists by covering a special track.

Other bands throw in lyrics or references that leave their fans questioning the hidden meaning behind the lines.

But Attic Lights have gone one further with their new track Orbison. It really is a tribute to The Big O.

The band's lead singer, Kev Sherry, explains the reasoning behind the wacky tune (and video).

"It’s kind of what me and the other songwriter bonded over when we first met," he said. "A tribute to later Orbison, the 80s and the under-appreciated songs like You Got It and Drove All Night. It’s an over the top mad song.

"For the video, it’s a game of spotting as many pop culture references to Roy Orbison as you can.

"There’s really off kilter things with a tribute to Blue Velvet as well where I dress up as two characters from the film and sort of have a face-off with myself.

"There’s also this Swedish guy called Michael Kelly who is famous because he writes short stories about Roy Orbison and they all end the same way – with Roy Orbison getting wrapped in Clingfilm. So there’s a bit of that in the video as well."

It's the second single from their second album Super De Luxe, which was released last summer.

Through the release of first single Say You Love Me the band went on to play festivals.

Sherry admitted: "It was quite surprising. We ended up headlining a big festival in Spain and also opening Benicassim. We didn't know how it happened but it was excellent."

With a jam-packed summer and an important Roy Orbison tribute to film, the 32-year-old frontman has no reason to worry about the second single taking so long to release.

He said: "The video took so long because it was quite a complex video to make. We shot it in very early October and it took ages to edit it the right way to make sure it was exactly like David Lynch shots.

"We have another single coming out at the start of summer which is a collaboration with a really big Spanish band called La Casa Azul and they’re a kind of Spanish Daft Punk, for want of a better description.

"They're on the same label as us so we're doing a joint single and then they’re going to remix a couple of our tracks. So hopefully that will lead to the usual malarkey."

To release the new single, the band are also playing a special one-off show at Broadcast on Sunday, March 30.

Like the video, the gig itself will continue down the theme of Orbison, and Lynch.

Sherry said: "We're turning it into this mad event. I hate to call it Roy Orbison impersonations but there’ll be weird performance artists walking about the crowd.

"There'll also be a hidden gypsy band in the crowd who'll play at different times during the gig at different bits of the room."

It's a far cry from their very first EP which was released way back in 2005 - a fact which surprised Sherry.

He added: "That’s terrifying. On the good days it doesn't feel like ten years but on the bad it feels a lot longer.

"I hadn't even thought of it but now that you mention it we should probably do some sort of ten year anniversary thing."
