What do you do when the band you’re in reaches the rather admirable milestone of recording album number 16? Well, if you’re BMX Bandits, you create a “space-pop-opera”, replete with music that sounds like it’s managed to quantum leap from decades both past and future.
BMX Bandits in Space is an odd mixture, comprising space-age sounds mixed with retrospective reminiscence, like it’s the backing to a love story filmed by the Tomorrow’s World crew. Specifically, ‘Look at You, Look at Me’ could soundtrack George and Jane Jetson renewing their vows, while ‘All Around the Wold’ sounds like it was made with the same technology used to create ringtones on the Nokia 3210.
This all being said, with ‘…In Space’, BMX Bandits have created a truly magical pop album that crosses so many decades in its reach and influence it seems to have made itself completely age-proof. You can imagine playing it to people 50 years ago or 50 years into the future and they’d happily take your word that it was recorded just yesterday. So on that basis alone, ‘BMX Bandits in Space’ has the potential to go down as a classic, not only in the band’s individual canon, but for music in general.
