The School - Loveless Unbeliever

Dann nehme ich mal den von Dirk hinterlegten und für mich bestimmten Faden auf und lege hiermit jedem das Debut-Album von The School aus Cardiff ans Herz.

Mein erstes Interesse an den acht Walisern wurde durch einen Kommentar auf meiner (mittlerweile nicht mehr existenten) MySpace-Seite geweckt. Ich solle mir die Band unbedingt anhören, die würden mir bestimmt gefallen. Dieser Kommentar stammte von jemandem, mit dem ich lange Zeit im Plattenladen arbeitete und der Mann hatte natürlich recht. Feinster Indiepop mit großem 60s-Einfluss und perfekten Harmonien. Wunderschön!

Ein Album war aber noch lange nicht in Sicht und erst als ich Monate später in Willie's Heartbreak Hotel in Paderborn saß und den DJ nach dem Song fragte, den er gerade spielte, waren sie auf einmal wieder da:

Aber auch danach verging über ein Jahr, ohne dass die Band, die sich 2007 zusammenfand und als Einflüsse Brian Wilson, Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich und Carole King nennt, die Welt mit einem Album beglückte. Jetzt hat das Warten endlich ein Ende. Und es hat sich gelohnt zu warten: 13 Songs, die Freunde der Musik von Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura und Lucky Soul begeistern werden. Ein kleines Indiepop-Juwel!

Some things in life are worth the wait, "Loveless unbeliever", the debut album by Cardiff based fine purveyors of indiepop, The School is most certainly one of those things. "Loveless unbeliever" will bring a wide smile to any music fan remotely interested in indiepop or the Sixties girl group sound, all the hallmarks are present, production by the indiepop maestro Ian Catt (think The Field Mice or Saint Etienne, possibly bypassing The Tweenies for a moment), harmonies, handclaps, strings, it's all here. Frontwoman Liz Hunt has one of those voices that such fans will just crave for and can never get enough of. (Team Stevie)

It’s that word “indie” that looms largest here – not least in the band’s own promo materials. It’s the indie of yore; the indie of Belle & Sebastian, St Etienne and Sarah Records, where ’60s fashion met romantic poetry and outsider art to an optimistic soundtrack of 7” singles dominated by fey female vocalists cooing over jangly guitars and synth strings.
