La Bien Querida

A couple of weeks back, La Bien Querida released the wonderful new single “El Lado Bueno” from upcoming album “Fuego” (Elefant Records). It’s a bit of a change of direction for Ana Fernández-Villaverde and has a most welcome New Order undertone which I love.  I was delighted when Ana agreed to do an interview with us last year following the release of the epic film/music project “Premeditación, Nocturnidad Y Alevosía [La Película]”. Unfortunately, the interview fell through the cracks when we moved from being FEW to SWIT last year and remained undiscovered until last month. I consider  La Bien Querida to be one of most interesting artists at work today so I’m delighted to finally publish the interview and apologise sincerely for the delay. Here it is in both Spanish & English – enjoy!

¿Qué te llevó a pasarte de la pintura a la música? Tu proceso creativo, ¿es el mismo para ambas disciplinas?

Mi amigo J del grupo Los Planetas me animó a empezar a componer canciones, grabé una maqueta que subí al myspace y gracias a David Rodríguez que se la pasó al sello Elefant Records, fiché con ese sello y es con el que he sacado mis 4 discos. La pintura no la he dejado del todo. Las últimas portadas,”Ceremonia” y “Premeditación, Nocturnidad y Alevosía “ son cuadros míos. Pero si es verdad que la música me ocupa la mayor parte del tiempo y en realidad no puedo desconectar nunca, siempre estoy pensando en canciones. El proceso creativo en ambas disciplinas es similar, basicamente como decía Picasso la inspiración existe pero te encuentra y la encuentras trabajando y metiendo horas.

What prompted you to move from painting to music? Is your creative process similar for both?

My friend J, of Los Planetas, encouraged me to start writing songs; I  recorded a demo and uploaded it to myspace and —thanks to David Rodríguez, who passed it on to the label— I signed with Elefant Records, the same label that launched my 4 albums. I haven’t abandoned my painting altogether. The sleeves for the last albums,”Ceremonia” and “Premeditación, Nocturnidad y Alevosía“ are my own doing. It is true, however, that music takes up most of my time; in actual fact, I can never disconnect from music completely: I am always thinking of new songs. The creative process in both arts is similar: as Picasso used to say “Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.”

Tus primeros demos y trabajos tuvieron un recibimiento impresionante en España, ¿esperabas tener tanto éxito con tanta rapidez?

No, no pensé nunca que acabaría dedicandome a la música. Mi papá era músico pero yo nunca pensé que tenía cualidades para ello. Me dejé llevar por esos caminos que a veces te lleva la vida y me lo encontré, trabajando, claro. Rápidamente me dí a conocer y a base de esfuerzo he conseguido mantenerme que es complicado en esta época en la que vivimos en la que prima la novedad.  Yo ya no soy novedad así que lo que  trato es de sorprender sobre todo a mi misma y hacer algo diferente en cada disco.

Your early demos and releases received universal acclaim in Spain, were you expecting the success that came your way so quickly?

No, I never thought I would end up getting into the music business. My father was a musician but I never thought I had what it took to follow in his footsteps. I just happened to stumble into music… inspiration found me working. I made myself known through hard work and I have managed to remain in this business, which is difficult to in today’s world where the novelty is what counts.  I am not a novelty anymore, so I try to surprise myself with something new in every album.

El lanzamiento del nuevo proyecto (Premeditación, Nocturnidad Y Alevosía [La Película]) demandó esfuerzo y colaboración enormes. ¿Estás feliz con el resultado?

Si, Juanma Carrillo, el director de la película se involucró mucho y trabajó duro para sacarlo. Entendíó rápidamente el concepto del disco dividido en 3 partes pero que juntos formaran una unidad y lo llevó al cine.

 There has been a huge amount of effort and collaboration to begin the new project (Premeditación, Nocturnidad Y Alevosía [La Película]) together. Are you happy with the results?

Yes, Juanma Carrillo, the director of the film, was very much involved in the project and worked hard to make a success of it. He understood pretty quickly the concept of the album: although it is divided into 3 parts it is a unit and he managed to merge them into a film.

¿Cuáles son los artistas o las bandas que más admiras?

Me gustan mucho New Order, The Cure, Lana del Rey, el Krautrock.

Which artists/bands do you admire the most?

I like New Order, The Cure, Lana del Rey, Krautrock a lot.

Fuera del ámbito de la música, ¿cuáles son las influencias de que te nutres para tu arte?

Me influye todo lo que me rodea, el día a día, una conversación con una amiga,  la televisión,  un libro de poemas. No puedo desconectar y siempre estoy pensando en una nueva canción.

What, outside the world of music, influences your art?

Everything around me influences my work: my routine, a chat with a friend, the TV, a book of poetry. I don’t switch off; I’m always thinking of a new song.

¿Cuál es tu recuerdo musical primero, más antiguo?

Mi padre que falleció el año pasado era músico y desde muy niña la música ha estado en mi vida. Recuerdo ir a ver actuaciones de mi padre en los pueblos.

What is your earliest musical memory?

My father, who passed away last year, was a musician, so music has always been part of my life growing up. I recall going to my dad’s gigs in his tours in small towns.

¿Cuál de las canciones de tu autoría es tu favorita, o esa es una pregunta muy difícil de responder?

Me  cuesta responder porque realmente no me encanta ninguna. Mi gran reto es conseguir hacer una canción de la que esté super orgullosa pero mirándo por el lado bueno, esa sensación, ese desencanto hacia mi,  me da fuerza e ilusión para seguir intentándolo.Me fijo en músicos que admiro como compositores o como músicos y en el camino yo voy encontrando mis canciones.Bueno, del  último disco me parece que están bien: “Poderes Extraños” y “Muero de Amor”.

 What is your favourite song that you’ve written yourself or is that too difficult to answer?

It is a tough question; I am not fascinated by any of them in particular. My biggest challenge is writing a song about which I’m extremely proud. Then again, the fact that none of my songs blows me away encourages me to keep on trying and dream that that special song will come along.I focus on musicians I admire for their lyrics or their melodies and I find my own songs as I do so.From the last album the ones I quite like are “Poderes Extraños” and “Muero de Amor”.

¿Qué canción de otro autor te hubiera gustado escribir?

Alguna de The Cure, como: “Just like heaven” o “Friday I´m in Love”,. Hay un compositor español que se llama Manuel Alejandro que tiene canciones populares buenísimas como “Ese Hombre”, “Como una Ola”.

What song by another artist do you wish you had written?

Some by The Cure like “Just like heaven” or “Friday I´m in Love”There is a Spanish composer, Manuel Alejandro, who writes great songs that are quite popular, like “Ese Hombre”, “Como una Ola”.

What new bands/artists do you admire?

Lana del Rey, The XX, Phoenix.

¿Qué música tocarías en tu funeral?

Uyyy, no sé, me gustaría llegar a viejita y ser poder ser abuela. No sé que estaré escuchando dentro de unos años… Pero bueno, una canción de Los Planetas que son las que escuchaba de joven adolescente.

What music would you have played at your funeral?

Gee, I don’t know; I would like to grow to be very old, become a granny. I cannot foresee what I’ll be listening to in a couple of years. I guess, a song by Los Planetas, the band I used to listen to as a teenager.

¿Cuál es la pregunta que siempre deseaste que te hicieran, pero nunca te han hecho? ¿Y cuál sería la respuesta?

Jajajja, no sé… lo que sí sé, son las preguntas que no me gustan que me hagan por ejemplo:

¿cuál es tu canción favorita? Y nunca sé que decir porque me gustan muchísimas canciones todo depende del momento.

 What question do you wish you were asked but never are? And what would your answer be?

Ha, ha, ha, I don’t know… What I do know is those I do not like to be asked, for example:

What’s your favourite song? I never know what to answer; there are so many songs I like. It all depends on the circumstances.
