The latest release from our singles collection "New Adventures in pop": JUST HANDSHAKES [WE'RE BRITISH], ED WOOD LOVERS and FOXES!
We at Elefant are congratulating ourselves for three new releases from the singles collection “New Adventures in Pop”, a series of limited edition 7” color vinyls that is more successful than we could have imagined, selling out all the releases so far. This is exactly why we are so excited to introduce three new groups, with three distinct sounds that will definitely give people a lot to talk about. On the one hand, the quartet from Leeds, JUST HANDSHAKES (WE’RE BRITISH), one of the most commented names on the indie-pop scene in Britain; that great hope of electronic pop from our country that are ED WOOD LOVERS; and finally, the rhythmic imagination and electronic evocation of FOXES!.

They are one of the most promising bands on the British scene, one of the most original names that we have heard of in years. They’re in the spotlight and have been widely praised by Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, two of the most important radio presenters on the BBC. Rough Trade record stores themselves have considered them one of the best indie groups of the moment. Clara, Michael, Edward and Jim have already published three limited-edition singles as well as a split, all of which are sold out. They’ve played with bands like THE XX, ALLO DARLIN’, TEMPER TRAP and SHOUT OUT LOUDS, and from their base in Leeds they have surprised and amazed with their fresh, personal, addictive, danceable indie-pop, pushed forward by Clara’s playful voice. Because of this and many more reasons, we at Elefant Records have turned to them for our New Adventures in Pop and we are presenting an exquisite single, which is going to be a delicacy for everyone, and which has been produced by none other than Ben Siddall of THE LODGER.
“Falling over our fear” opens the release, and we already have solid proof of its superior quality; their songs are complex, unpredictable, evasive, but completely direct and catchy. The beginning could make some people mention THE STROKES, a bridge that reminds us of the freshness of THE SUNDAYS, and a melody that VAMPIRE WEEKEND would be happy to write… but the song isn’t really any of that. Or, better yet, it is that and much more too. Right from the start we noticed that we have an incomparable and tremendously original band before us. “Black and Blue” is a clear delicacy. With the posturing of THE SMITHS, Clara’s phrasing reminds us a lot of Morrissey, the song breaks with a marvelous and solid chorus. “Downward Spiral” is a song that gets tangentially close to punk-pop, an impossible mix between MIAOW, THE WOULD BE GOODS and THE POPGUNS, always keeping that indie-pop spirit, showing us that their love of the great melodies never pushes aside their energy, intensity or electricity. Finally, closing this limited-edition single is the song “Brakes”, with echoes of Sunshine Pop, and its crescendoing chorus is absolutely incredible.
You will never forget their name and their songs will be with us for a long time. They are going to be one of the biggest surprises of 2011 and soon everyone will be talking about them.

They are called upon to be one of the biggest Spanish pop bands. Heirs to the great masters of electronic pop like FAMILY and PARADE, addictive like early ELLOS, this duo from Cuenca formed by Santi and José, with three demos and a self-released album, have already been to the finals in the most prestigious contests in the country (Lemon Pop, Contempopranea, Demonova, Levis Unfamous Music Awards …), they have already covered the Spanish map from top to bottom, and they have visited some of the most respected specialized media (Flor de Pasión, Mondosonoro, JeNeSaisPop…), always leaving the group’s unmistakable trail behind them. Their versatility, their precious melodies that you can’t help but dance to and their attitude are some of their major virtues, the house specialty. It is beyond a shadow of a doubt that this single for the New Adventures in Pop collection will be what definitively catapults them into Olympus’ orbit, where they belong.
This prodigious EP opens with “Ciencias Exactas”, a type of revisiting of THE RONETTES via ASTRUD, and incredible gem, with marvellous, universal, unforgettable lyrics that relate the cold scientific world with human feelings. What’s more, Ana Fernández-Villaverde of LA BIEN QUERIDA collaborates on the song. “Monstruo” goes a little bit farther into techno-pop territory with guitars, closely following the steps of Guille Mostaza, but with the elegance of DAR FUL FUL. “Nunca llevo suelto” is one of their most personal songs, moving within the limits of the most danceable pop, but discovering more acoustic tones and lyrics full of irony and nerve. “Yo ser como yo” looks blatantly toward the dance floor, at times evoking the best choruses of ALASKA Y DINARAMA and THE ZOMBIES with those detailed, pristine and tremendously effective arrangements. An essential single!!

FOXES! are a quartet from Brighton formed by Kayla Bell (vocals and drums), Adam Bell (vocals and guitar), Al Grice (bass and keyboards), Matthew Twaites (guitar, keyboards and omnichord), accustomed to the single format (they already have four in their discography) and who have a new one for us, before they debut their full-length. With a hard-to-classify style, escaping all definitions but full of electricity and imagination, their youthful, fresh sound is a paragon of energy that is hard to come by nowadays.
“The Pandar Bear Song” celebrates sharpened, unbridled guitars full of a vitality that reminds us of the first ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI songs, but livelier and more biting, a daring cocktail with doses of GIRLS AT OUR BEST, BERSUIT, BIS, PAVEMENT and APPLES IN STEREO, in a song dedicated to the British presenter Annika Rice. “Alex Badamchi” heads off in a different direction, with a poppier spirit, meandering from dreamy to circus-like, passing through Laetitia Sadier’s and STEREOLAB’s hands, with a constantly broken, unpredictable structure. “Sailors” brings us back to STEREOLAB but this time with an air of THE AISLERS SET, a bridge THE DELGADOS would have been happy to write, and evocative lyrics. To wrap things up, on “Botswana” we find ourselves once again with a song that in little more than three minutes offers us a structure full of completely different parts, with jumps and changes and a hypnotic and contagious rhythm.
They’re a surprising, imaginative group that makes pop out of fantasies and opens all possible doors.
