DEDICATESSEN Vol. 12
Limited Edition of 500 copies in yellow coloured 7" vinyl, including a download coupon of this album in digital format (MP3 - 320 kbps)
Wild Honey, Guillermo Farré’s musical project, is back, in this case on a beautiful yellow vinyl 7” single, to wrap up DEDICATESSEN, our latest singles collection. Since it started in February 2012, it has featured records by Parade, Doble Pletina, J’aime, AMA, Souvenir, Aldo Linares, Apenino, Pumuky, Klaus&Kinski, Solletico and Llum. “Dear Cindy” is dedicated to American conceptual portrait photographer Cindy Sherman, whose series of self-portraits “Untitled Film Still 96” made her especially celebrated. It is also Wild Honey’s second collaboration with our label, after their contribution to our Jabalina Love Songs collection. After two albums (the most recent, “Big Flash”, released last April, and produced by Stereolab’s Tim Gane), Guillermo Farré continues exploring the possibilities of pop songs. Using his usual influences as a starting point (The Beach Boys, Left Banke, Van Dyke Parks, The Millenium...), in this EP Guillermo focuses especially on beat patterns, which complement very well his usual array of brilliant arrangements, in a delicately crafted record. The three new songs on “Dear Cindy” are based on three of Cindy Sherman’s photographs, three self-portraits used by Farré as starting point to fabulate three stories based on the characters into which Sherman transformed herself. A bit like photographs transforming itself into songs. Any of the songs could have been A sides, but the chosen one is “Untitled Film Still 96”, and not just because it is the picture which named the series. It is a wonderful carousel of guitars, wind arrangements and vocal harmonies, which ride on a furious beat and become a pop spiral complete with music box arrangements. Side B is made up by The Echo” and “I Made This Tape For You”, two more beautiful Farré compositions. “The Echo” sound British, with echoes (pun intended) of The Kinks, The Hollies at their most psychedelic, but also of California band Love. “I Made This Tape For You” is the EP closer, and the most lively. The arrangements are a tad more contemporary, with arrangements reminiscent of Jon Brion or The High Llamas, and beats in the vein of Caribou or MGMT. All the songs were recorded at Sunshine (Madrid) and produced by Guillermo Farré, with collaborators Diego Blanco (drums) and María Hernández (backing vocals). Mixed by Dany Richter at El Lado Izquierdo (Madrid) and mastered by Arturo Vaquero at the Abrigueiro studio in Friol (Lugo, Spain). As in the rest of the DEDICATESSEN collection, the beautiful artwork and sleeve were designed by Jesús Galvañ.
