DEDICATESSEN Vol. 7

Apenino's new DEDICATESSEN is dedicated to basketball, one of Marco A. Maril's passions. "Cerca de las estrellas" was a pioneering Spanish TV programme dedicated whic covered the NBA league from 1988 to 1995. Nevertheless, the moment when a generation of pop lovers got hooked on basketball dates back to the Los Angeles 1884 Olympics. Like the title song says, this bunch of songs (including this particular techno-surf piece) started to be written when he first learned the names of Spanish team members Corbalán, Epi, Iturriaga, Martín, Romay... The "ukeleles wall of sound" which defines Apenino's music came later, along with his loops and programming, which today complete the court where his music and songs are played. Regardless of its topic, “Apenino cerca de la estrellas” is a new venture into the beauty of simple pop melodies, encapsulated in a collection of songs which melt in our ears after the first play.
"En la playa", which opens side B of this green traslucent vinyl single, recollects the historical list of names that we mentioned before. Brian Wilson, Tiny Tim or Jobim are just some of the references in Apenino's universe since his debut album “En la hora azul” (Jabalina 2003). His discography has showed the influence of the Sarah Records bands, The Magnetic Fields or Carlos Berlanga among others. “En la playa” opens with the legendary drum roll of “Be my baby” by The Ronettes, and it is not difficult to magine Marco writing this song one night, at the seaside, with his ukelele and a gin-tonic. It is a song full of pictures, musical or not: Pavese, the sunsets, stolen kisses, neverending nights... and baskets, of course. All of it wrapped with that ethereal atmosphere that Apenino conveys so masterfully, which brings us back memories from past or dreamt summers on a Spector beat. Single closer “Maxic-O”, is classic Marco A. Maril, a song with the soft electronic washes of an electric ukelele which conveys both the thrill of a basketball game and the magic of Apenino's music. An ode to player Maxi Stanic (Maxic-O), the most important in Marco's team (the Obradoiro) who on a mythical season jumped heroically with an injured leg to try and save the matches.
