Biography

PURÉ (Purée) is a new band from Madrid, a five piece formed by Irene, Begoña, Ana, Javi and Carlos. This is their debut single, in which they reveal surprisingly self-confident and mature if we take into account they’ve been together for such little time. Their music is very special: they share some points in common -innocence and joy- with most of the new Spanish pop outfits from the class of 99, but it’s not easy to pigeonhole PURÉ in any category. They’ve got the knack of sounding different to all. They can remind us of another great Spanish band, PATRULLERO MANCUSO -also on Elefant!- but mainly in that both bands aim to sound fresh and original.

“Gérôme”, the opening track, is sung in French, something pretty rare in Spain, and it’s the catchiest and most accesible. Pure jangle pop, boasting an excellent melody courtesy of Irene, vocalist and composer of all the songs.

“Nana” is weirder, specially for the words (“Cotton flowers unfold in your veins”). A disturbing lullaby which is opened with some lazy yawns and closed with the words “It’s time to switch off the sun”.

“Explosión” is, again, a different thing. A vibrant, jazz-flavoured instrumental piece with an simple but exquisite piano arrangement.

And the farewell -“Au revoir, à bientot”- is served by “Tant Pis”, an unclassifiable track featuring Irene’s whispers -in French again- over some hiper elegant bossa nova guitar chords.

PURÉ is a really outstanding act, five people that have something to say, and that know perfectly how to do it. Something which is not very common in a debut single.
