Nick Garrie keeps on creating delicious songs that he records with different collaborators all over the world (we’re thinking of his last collaboration with PIGMY on “Rainy Days In Sunny Sydney”). He recently recorded a version of the Christmas classic “In The Bleak Midwinter”. The recording began in the U.S. in the studios Gary Olson (THE LADYBUG TRANSISTOR) has in New York, and finished in England with the recording of the children at the Meadowbrook Montessori School in Warley, the school where Nick teaches. Rich Walgate was in charge of recording the choir and remixing the final version of the song that Nick Garrie is celebrating the holidays with this year. And what’s more, he’s generous and thoughtful enough to give it to us as a present. It's a song that Nick started to sing when he was eight years old with the chapel choir, dressed in their white and blue robes. The choir would go around the hospitals in the area to sing for the elderly people who didn't have any family.
The song was written by the poet Christina Rosetti before 1872 and was arranged with music by none other than Gustav Holst in 1906. Here, Nick Garrie offers us a delicate, almost acoustic version, with the Meadowbrook Montessori School’s children’s voices that give it a subtle, delicious, angelic spirit. It’s not the first time Garrie appears with a children’s choir – remember, for example, the song “The Clockmaker” from his album “49 Arlington Gardens” or his performance at the Indietracks Festival in 2009. This is a singular, unique gift at such a special time of year.
